Create an invoice for a Shopify order

How a Shopify order becomes a German invoice PDF, with your own invoice number and the net amount per tax rate. Free on the Free plan.

The short answer

Open the order in the app and click Create invoice. The address, the items and the tax come from the order, the number from your own series. What you get is a PDF, which you download and send yourself.

You enter your company details once, before the first invoice. Invoices and delivery notes are free on the Free plan, one order at a time, with no cap.

In the app

Set it up once. After that, every invoice is one click.

01

Open the app's settings. Your company name, address and tax number or VAT id go on every invoice. What your store already knows about you is filled in. Check it and save.

02

Under Numbering, set the invoice prefix and the next invoice number. If you leave them alone, the app starts at RE-1.

03

Open the order from the app's order list. In Shopify, More actions on the order takes you straight there.

04

Click Create invoice. If the goods have not shipped yet, the app first asks whether they leave today or later. With later, the invoice names the month you expect to ship.

05

Download the PDF and send it to your customer, by email or in the parcel.

What the invoice shows

The app prints on every invoice:

  • your company name, your address and your tax number or VAT id
  • your customer's name and address from the order
  • the invoice number, the issue date, the order number and the date of supply
  • every item with its quantity, unit price and line total
  • the net amount and the tax per tax rate, the tax on shipping included
  • where the order calls for it, the note under § 19 UStG for a small business or under § 6a UStG for a business buyer in another EU country

The app does not work the tax out again. It prints what Shopify calculated. When the figures do not add up, it creates no invoice and tells you why. Which other details your business needs is a question for your tax adviser.

With Shopify alone

Shopify can create its own VAT invoice for orders placed through the checkout. The option is called "Generate and display invoices when orders are placed", under Settings > Taxes and duties > European Union > VAT invoices.

We tried it on a test store on 12 September 2026. It counted per destination country, as in INV-DE-1. It printed no § 19 UStG note, and after a partial refund the PDF stayed as it was.

Use one or the other. With both on, one sale has two invoices with two numbers.

What the app does not do

The app turns the order into a PDF. These are not part of it:

It does not send the invoice to your customer and never emails them.

It does not create an e-invoice in XRechnung or ZUGFeRD.

It changes nothing in your store, the order included.

It creates no invoice for an order older than 60 days.

It is not tax advice.
